On 17th September 2007, Jubilee Centre held a one day seminar on how the Home Based Care should support and care for people living and affected with HIV/AIDS in their communities. The Volunteers who participated came from Mapalo and Chifubu communities respectively.

clip_image002The objective of the seminar was that the two different communities share their different experiences in working with people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS.

The seminar started around 10:00 with an opening prayer from one of the volunteers sister Grace, and continued with opening remarks and the objective of the seminar from Polly Freer. Each community had to present what they prepared to show and share with the other community.

The Mapalo HBC presented a drama on the different approaches to help people who are living with HIV/AIDS. The objective of the drama was that volunteers who help people living with HIV/AIDS should not be judgmental.

The Chifubu H.B.C presented a play that focused on a volunteer’s attitude when helping the people living and affected with HIV/AIDS. The play provided an opportunity for each volunteer to see whether they served because of their love for Christ or because of other motives.

Later a question was asked on the role and duties of a volunteer.

Here are some answers that came from the volunteers on the role and duties of a volunteer to the patients.

  • DSCF1293 They should share the message of hope in Jesus
  • A volunteer should make the patient to understand that someone loves them
  • Share clothes and food
  • Help the patient to go to the clinic or hospital
  • Bring families together
  • Clean houses
  • Advice them to know their status
  • Always have time for the patient (day and night)
  • Bring peace in homes where there in no peace
  • Treat the patient as if they are your own family
  • Keep the secrets of the patient
  • Pray and encourage the patient with the word of God

In the last session the volunteers answered the question on the good characteristics of a good volunteer. The answers that came from the participants were;

  • A good volunteer is someone who is available
  • Should be compassionate
  • Should understand problems
  • Is a good listener
  • Keeps secrets
  • Can lead by example
  • Is a mature Christian who knows how to pray and teach the bible
  • Can stand on behalf of the community
  • Does not make false promises
  • Has the heart to work for God and not for money

At the end of the meeting the volunteers had a meal together and later each volunteer was given a gift of 25Kg bag of mealie meal, a 750ml bottle of cooking oil, a 5Kg bag beans and money for other provisions.

The volunteer thanked Jubilee Centre for the work they are doing of empowering people in the community to help their fellow people. They also thanked Jubilee Centre for the gifts. The seminar ended with prayer.
