Jubilee Centre July 10th, 2008

Church Mobilisation Distribution:

Jubilee Centre, motivated by a sincere desire to know Christ and make His light shine in a dark world is continuing to encourage and challenge churches in how to minister to the needs of people in their communities. In the last two months Pastor Temfwe and Pukuta Mwanza (Church Mobilization Manager) conducted workshops in three communities that were attended by 80 church leaders. Subjects covered included developing community strategy and writing project proposals. “The church” Lawrence told the leaders, “ought to be a lit lamp fiercely and graciously exposing and destroying HIV/AIDS, poverty and sin in our communities.” Agnes Zalila, the HIV/AIDS Coordinator also conducted workshops for 70 HIV/AIDS caregivers in Chifubu and Chibuluma. She encouraged the caregivers to be learning daily about trends in HIV/AIDS infection, care and prevention. She spoke to the caregivers on the importance of being honest, gracious and forthright with people living with AIDS and their families. She also encouraged them to seek daily guidance and strength from God’s word.

Through these workshops the churches have learned that serving the community as a team builds their Beneficiary of JCcredibility. Through the support from the Willow Creek and Ridgepoint churches in the USA and the Expanded Church Response in Lusaka, the churches have a growing ministry of serving people living with HIV/AIDS and orphans and vulnerable children including child headed homes. In the last two months 690 homes with chronically sick people and orphans have been helped with blankets, educational and food supplies. Asked what the training and support was doing to the church outreach, Pastor Joyce Chanda of Revival Worship Centre said, “We have a new credibility as a result of serving our community. Civic and community leaders are asking us for advice regarding our community. People living with AIDS in our churches are no longer having problem with stigma. They are freely sharing about their pain and are making themselves available to be part of the solution in reducing HIV/AIDS infection in our nation.”

Micah Challenge Launch in Kabwe:

More than 150 pastors, church leaders, and other guests met in Kabwe – Central Province of Zambia to launch Micah Challenge Zambia (MCZ) on Wednesday, May 28, 2008. The purpose of the launch was to explain the objectives of Micah Challenge and choose a Steering Committee to spearhead the program at the provincial level. Pastor Temfwe in his address to the pastors reminded them to be relevant. He quoted Martin Luther who said, “If you preach the gospel in all respects with the exception of the issues which deal specifically with your time, you are not preaching the gospel.” He challenged them to identify issues that deal with their time.

The keynote speaker of the day was Central Province Deputy Permanent Secretary Christopher Mutembo. He called for the government, opposition parties, international institutions, the business sectors, civil society, and the Church to work together towards the MDGs. “To achieve the MDGs, Zambia needs everyone,” exclaimed the Deputy Permanent Secretary. He emphasized the role of the government as an entity for the Church and Civil Society to partner with in development. He also encouraged unity “across denominations, and tribes, across rich and poor, across men and women and children,” in order to create an influential voice for change. His presence at

the launch demonstrated the government’s desire to accomplish the MDGs and its support of the goals of Micah Challenge.

Model the Youth:

The Jubilee Centre continues to give hope to the youth through its Youth Action Clubs programs. The primary purpose is to eliminate AIDS infections among young people and to disciple them into loving relationships with Jesus Christ.

The last two months the JC youth team of Daniel Daka, Phoebe Chanda and David Temfwe was joined by a team of three students (Ashleigh Rogers, Chloe Lee and Bethany Wilson) from Wheaton College. The team conducted one day training workshops for youth church leaders in two communities that were presented by twenty eight churches. A total of 146 youth leaders where helped in how to lead lively youth groups that give hope for a better future in the context of unemployment and HIV/AIDS challenges. In addition the team held rallies in two schools and in one community at which 300 participants were encouraged to go for VCT, given practical tools to resist sexual pressure and to dream for their future.

Wheaton Team Returns Home:

Jubilee Centre through its short team learning program received a team of Wheaton college students (Chloé Lee, Ashleigh Rogers, and Bethany Wilson). The Wheaton Team helped in teaching in the Youth Wheaton Team Action Clubs and visited homes of people living with AIDS, shared the word of God with them and provided food supplements.

Ashleigh Rogers sharing about her experience stated, “Watching the people at JC has redefined what it means to be the hands and feet of Jesus to the poor, widowed, and orphan and vulnerable children.” The Team will be greatly missed for their hard work, the spirit of learning, and the heart of serving others.

JC Prayer Requests:

Continue praying for the provincial Micah Challenge provincial launches. The essence of the sensitization campaign is to launch and develop Micah Challenge across the country. They will be one day events bringing together church leaders and Christians from the province.

Pray that the JC Conference Centre, which is currently under construction, will be completed by August 2008. $39,000 is required to complete the centre including table, chairs and roofing. The conference centre is important for our church mobilization program as we have developed an integral mission course for churches that we want to conduct regularly using this facility

We need to fill the two positions of a youth worker and a church mobilization coordinator. Please pray that the right people be found before the end of July.
