Wheaton College Students at Jubilee Centre

Jubilee Centre July 8th, 2009

The Wheaton College Team (Kelly Smith, Erin Cuculi, Dan Alle, Elliot Nelson and Hannah Walters) are volunteering at the Jubilee Centre through Wheaton College’s Student Ministry Partners summer program. They arrived on June 23 and will be in Zambia until August 7. Thus far, they’ve helped lead an HIV/AIDS workshop for Church Youth leaders in Mpongwe, shared music and a testimony at the Ndola Northern Technical College (NORTEC) worship service, and taught grades 1-6 at Jesus Cares Community School in Mapalo. The team enjoyed attending a mid-week Bible study at the home of one of the members of Bread of Life Church International, and it was a time of encouragement for all. They have also visited Bread of Life International Church and Bethel City Church in Twapia for Sunday services, where they have enjoyed the opportunity to meet and worship with members of the local community. In the upcoming weeks, they look forward to do more teaching at different community schools, helping with additional HIV-AIDS workshops, facilitating youth clubs and assisting the Jubilee Centre in various other projects.

While at Jesus Cares Community School, the team was able to work alongside the permanent teacher to  instruct the students in a variety of subjects including mathematics, science, English and Bible. With the 1st and 2nd grade class, the team worked on the alphabet, basic spelling and reading, English vocabulary practice, and addition and subtraction. With the 3rd and 4th grade class, the team taught English grammar constructs, science lessons focused on the earth and solar system, and math lessons on multiplication and long division. In the 5th and 6th grade class, the team covered basic geology and astronomy in science, sets in mathematics, and more advanced grammar constructs in English. In all the classes, the team taught Bible lessons emphasizing the attributes of God as creator, DSCN1292powerful healer, and loving Father. The team was also able to teach the 1st-4th grade students several Bible songs, which was fun for both the team and the students. Opportunities to play and interact with the children during recess times were also a highlight for the team.

The team feels truly blessed by the opportunities they have had thus far, and they are looking forward to continuing their work with the Jubilee Centre over the next four weeks. Please remember to keep the team in your prayers as they continue to serve the Lord in Zambia.
